this is how we walk on the moon - original outer space performance (April 2024)

Photos by Olivia Davis

I conceived and directed this is how we walk on the moon, which derived its title from a song by the late cellist and electronic artist Arthur Russell. Created to herald the Great American Total Eclipse, the piece explored our love of outer space, astronauts, and space travel. The performance featured a geodesic climbing dome and 3D projections including footage from Melies’ A Trip to the Moon from 1902.

Our Town by Thornton Wilder with new translations by Nilo Cruz (November 2021)

I directed this new and modern version of Our Town that celebrates the fictional town of Grover’s Corners as the multilingual and multicultural community of today. The Webb family acted in Spanish with English translations projected on the proscenium walls. The Stage Manager role, divided into three characters, starred one performer from Azerbaijan. The show also featured a gospel choir, Bomba music, and a wedding cake for audience members.

Topdog/Underdog by Suzan-Lori Parks (February 2016)

I directed this play in an abandoned storefront. The show featured a bucket drummer from Antigua who underscored the production. The idea for the show was to animate unused space and bring more diverse works into the community. Today, the space is now home to a multicultural hair salon.
